O...I have the same nose-nudging problem with Dixie. Often times she actually pushed into it with her shoulder (and my leg) or her chest. Doesn't help that the only gate I have is really heavy and you have to lift it onto and off of a block to close and open it. *sigh* I haven't gotten around to mastering this, yet, but appreciate reading your post and enjoyed the C. Hill link.
Thanks!Tinanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8996505457028956833.post-90444621412051122652010-04-06T08:54:44.365-05:002010-04-06T08:54:44.365-05:00Cricket's new thing is pulling me to the gate ...Cricket's new thing is pulling me to the gate and scraping my knee along the rail/gate. She hasn't done this in a *long* time. I need to catch her sooner and tip her nose to the rail to get her ribs off.

I'm far from mastery but I figured I need to get started if we're ever going to look fluid and savvy about gate opening. Fortunately, the gate to our arena works pretty well.Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08035597114351155375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8996505457028956833.post-74555703291930338892010-04-06T12:40:35.290-05:002010-04-06T12:40:35.290-05:00Thank you!! I've just printed out the Cherry Hill info. and will take it to the stable to practice.

ClareNaturally Gaitedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04979228208328700204noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8996505457028956833.post-26680321783287501192010-04-06T12:53:56.339-05:002010-04-06T12:53:56.339-05:00Clare,If you're really having problems figurin...Clare,
If you're really having problems figuring out the sequencing, do it unmounted, with no horse. Just imagine you're on G and think about how it would happen. Imagine the length of his body, your position in relation to him and how you would need to work the gate to get safely through.

You can also figure out the moves you need him to make and practice them with other obstacles. Going sideways to a rail to pick up your CS, putting his nose even with a barrel and asking him to yield the HQ so his nose "traces" the edge of the barrel until he's on the other side, standing still while you reach down and pull up your socks or fiddle with your boot laces. Then, when you actually open the gate, it will be more like stringing things together rather than doing one complicated maneuver.

~ LisaLisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08035597114351155375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8996505457028956833.post-55949678472117251872010-04-06T15:47:32.339-05:002010-04-06T15:47:32.339-05:00Thanks! Once we sideways out, can I stop and relax? Can I then yield her HQ and stop and relax? I need to make sure she is exiting the arena with the same emotional control we establish when the gate is first opened.Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08035597114351155375noreply@blogger.com
